Synposis:

As the boundaries between nutrition and therapeutics continue to be tested, BiomeMega is pioneering a new category of ingredients denominated parabiotic membrane fragments. These are non-living and biologically active structures derived from probiotic and environmental bacteria and fungi. These natural or engineered fragments retain the bioactivity of their parent cells while offering enhanced stability, safety, and functional performance across foods, nutraceuticals and health applications.  

Our initial focus is to develop innovative bacterial Omegas as parabiotic ingredients, using synthetic biology and precision fermentation to produce bioactive biomasses rich in omega-containing membrane extracts, and enriched by peptides and postbiotics that help our ingredients outperform conventional formulations. Our journey spans from strain discovery to MVP design and pilot production with corporates and CDMOs, and it includes robust proprietary and novel data from animal model testing, proteomic analysis, and regulatory-oriented AI designs for use in next-generation functional beverages, nutraceutical capsules and gummies, healthy snacks, specialty animal nutrition and more.

Speaker’s bio:

Associate Investigator at the Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB-Macquarie University), Industry Member at the Centre for Environmental and Agricultural Solutions to Antimicrobial Resistance (CEA StAR-University of Queensland). Former lecturer in Microbiology and Immunology at JCU-Townsville, PhD in Biotechnology jointly by the Pasteur Institute (Paris) and the Federal University of Pelotas, and a Masters in Agricultural Biotechnology. Previously principal of Cluster Biotechnology (a consulting firm helping Korean companies develop and commercialise medical devices), and former Honorary Affiliate at the University of Sydney having 30+ papers in Molecular Microbiology and Biomedical Genomics. Inventor in Australian Patents and International applications, Company Director with experience growing start-ups and scaleups, external Advisor at the University of the Sunshine Coast and James Cook University, former visiting scientist at UCONN Health Center (Molecular Vaccinology), and previous postdocs at Monash University (molecular microbiology), USYD (Synbio and cell biology of insect cells) and Butantan institute (molecular vaccinology). Gustavo is also a Venture Partner at Provisio Ventures and a Former member of the Rotaract International.
