Synthetic Biology is the engineering of biology: synthesis of complex, biologically based (or inspired) systems which execute functions that do not exist in nature. Due to the inherent complexity of biological systems however, biological factories can be difficult to design and control, often breaking down or performing short of expectation. Implementation of the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle on an automated foundry allows biological systems to be rapidly assembled, prototyped and optimized. Metadata collected from each engineering cycle can be used for machine learning, allowing systematic and rational programming of biological systems. In this technical meeting, we aim to address emerging issues on the development and use of biological foundries, with the overall goal of establishing guidelines to unite biofoundries globally. Topics that will be discussed includes: Automation Protocols, Standardization, Metrology, Data Analysis and Joint Project Development.
